Gender Equality

Gender equality is extremely important as the development challenges are experienced differently by genders in the context of climate change. For a big transformative change, a gender action plan would need to start from small steps. Gender Mainstreaming is a globally accepted strategy for promoting gender equality. Mainstreaming is not an end in itself but a strategy, an approach, a means to achieve the goal of gender equality.

Mainstreaming involves ensuring that gender perspectives and attention to the goal of gender equality are central to all activities – policy development, research, advocacy/dialogue, legislation, resource allocation, and planning, implementation and monitoring of programmes and projects. The SGP project aims to create gender positive and transformative results on the ground, which will ensure the incorporation of gender dimensions in the project design, implementation plan, monitoring and evaluation.

The gender action plan for the project recognises the differences between labour, knowledge, needs, and priorities of men and women, and calls for:

• Consultation with women's groups on needs and requirements associated with project interventions
• Promotion of equitable representation of women and men in project activities and groups established and/or strengthened, including the landscape-level multi-stakeholder governance platforms
• Development of strategic and planning documents in consultation with women
• Targeted budgeting of activities promoting active involvement of women and monitoring and evaluation of such activities
• Participation, training and skills building of women identified and budgeted in relevant project outcomes
• Encouragement of women's participation in the recruitment of project implementation staff, including consultancies and other service providers
• When applicable, equal payment of women and men
